Lokta Paper
Crafted in Nepal’s Kathmandu valleys, our Fair Trade lokta paper is made by artisans using the durable and evergreen lokta plant. Growing in abundance in the forests of Nepal and regenerating to a fully grown plant in just over five years, it has been used for Buddhist texts and legal documents for centuries. Depending on the individual design, the papers can be hand-dyed, dip-dyed or hand-screen printed.
Pleated rosette tree topper constructed from two rosettes, with contrasting colour in the centre and gold-dipped edges. Crafted by artisans in the Kathmandu valleys from Fair Trade paper made from fibres from the evergreen lokta plant, which grows in abundance in the forests of Nepal and regenerates to a fully grown plant in just over five years. With a wire which can be wrapped around the top of your tree. Packaged in a small box also made from Nepalese lokta papers.

The Making of Lokta Paper in Kathmandu
Crafted in Nepal’s Kathmandu valleys, our Fair Trade lokta paper is made by artisans from the durable and evergreen lokta plant. Growing in abundance in the forests of Nepal and regenerating to a fully grown plant in just over five years, it has been used for Buddhist texts and legal documents for centuries.
The bark is peeled and dried, then soaked overnight and boiled. Next, it is beaten until it becomes a watery pulp consistency. Framed mesh screens are dipped into the mixture and carefully lifted out to achieve even coverage. This is set out to dry in the sun until a sheet can be peeled from the screen. Depending on the individual design, the papers can be hand-dyed, dip-dyed or hand-screen printed.
