Preserving Provençal Craft at Poterie Barbotine

“In Provence, pottery is a part of our decor and environment,” says Nadège Arniaud, co-owner of Poterie Barbotine. “But it’s not only an object. It is a reminder of the past.”

Based in a workshop in Aubagne, the epicentre of Provençal pottery-making since the 18th century, Nadège and her team of dedicated artisans create hand-thrown clay vessels inspired by traditional ceramics. When the weather allows, the potters let the pieces dry in the open air before applying the glaze and firing them in the kiln.

Some of the bowls for TOAST feature a striking marbled effect, known as ‘jaspé’. A slip glaze is applied using a method dating back to the 15th century. “It’s a gestural technique where the colours are layered and mixed, forming abstract patterns,” explains Nadège.
